Sandvik Coromant has pledged its support to help commemorate SkillsUSA Week from Feb. 4-10, 2018. Celebrated in February each year, SkillsUSA Week gives state associations, advisors and student members the opportunity to promote SkillsUSA programs and activities at local and state levels. This year’s theme is “Job Ready—Day One.”
SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers and industry representatives working together to ensure America has a skilled workforce. Through educational programs, events and competitions that support career and technical education (CTE) in the nation’s classrooms, SkillsUSA is designed to help each student excel. This year’s national competition is on June 4-5 in Louisville, KY.
Sandvik Coromant will support SkillsUSA in the disciplines of CNC milling and CNC turning at local, state and national level. Sandvik Coromant takes a stance on addressing the skills gap issue around the world. According to the Hays Global Skill Index from 2016, it is predicted that there will be a global shortfall of skilled technical workers in manufacturing by 2025. As a result, manufacturers can expect to have a difficult time in the next few decades finding the talent they need to keep industry alive.
“Now is a great time for young people to seek out training and education for exciting careers in manufacturing,” said Brian Flores, senior manager for training and centers at Sandvik Coromant. “Sandvik Coromant is actively working to solve the challenge of the skills gap by providing expertise to various accredited vocational schools and educational partners, sharing knowledge through resources such as our Metal Cutting Technology training programs, which are available as in-person training and online training, and through a variety of other student initiatives such as Manufacturing Day and SkillsUSA.”
