President Barack Obama announced the formation of a National Network for Manufacturing Innovation — or NNMI — to strengthen US industry in March 2012 and renewed calls for it in his 2013 and 2014 State of the Union addresses.
Under his vision, the full network would be developed over a decade and consist of up to 45 regional hubs of public-private partnership, little Silicon Valleys of research and development for specific manufacturing technologies.
Each would develop specific manufacturing technologies, skilled workers and spin-off businesses in key technology areas.
The NNMI is modeled after the Fraunhofer Institutes of Germany. It was first proposed for the U.S. in June 2011 by the United States President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST), which recommended that the federal government launch an advanced manufacturing initiative of public-private partnerships to support “academia and industry for applied research on new technologies and design methodologies.” The recommendation called for $500 million per year to be appropriated to the Departments of Defense, Commerce and Energy, increasing to $1 billion per year over four years.
After a pilot program and an expansion through the budgets of several US departments, in December 2014, Congress passed the Revitalize American Manufacturing and Innovation (RAMI) Act — with complete bipartisan support — which instructed the Secretary of Commerce and the Administration to establish the Network for Manufacturing Innovation Program. The NNMI has been expanding ever since.

Companies participating in the digital manufacturing institute in Chicago include giants like Boeing, Caterpillar, and General Electric, but there are many smaller companies as well, like TechneGroup, which will be providing software. Mike Lemon of TechneGroup told the Tribune he’s excited for the exposure, but still isn’t sure what else his business will gain, especially compared to larger rivals also participating in the hub.
