MachiningCloud (Camarillo, CA), a product data provider for cutting tools, CNC machines and workholding, is partnering with the US Army Research and Development Commands Armament, Research, Design and Engineering Center (ARDEC) and its industrial partners to develop The Smart Machining Solution (SMS).
The problem with most manufacturing and machining facilities is the ability for CNC programmers and machinists to keep up with advances in tooling and production processes. Production engineers utilize outdated vendor catalogs or on-the-job experience for selection of cutting tools, cutting parameters and machining processes. These practices are time-consuming and ultimately lead to suboptimal production plans.
SMS is focused on the development and demonstration of a Network Enabled Manufacturing (NEM) Digital Manufacturing Consultant (DMC) solution for the optimization of subtractive manufacturing processes. SMS will provide a foundation for the streamlined resolution of weapon system manufacturability, inspectability and sustainability across its lifecycle. The solution will also improve the fidelity of information, the capture of manufacturing knowledge, and will enable the long term archival of product data. All of these benefits lead to improving performance in terms of cost, schedule and quality.
