High-Penetration Drilling Line
GEN3SYS XT Pro line high-penetration drilling products feature three unique geometries, and two advanced coatings, which in combination optimize solutions for different machining materials. GEN3SYS XT Pro inserts are designed specifically for ISO material classes, making tool selection easy. They are offered for steels (class P), cast irons (class K), and nonferrous materials (class N). The drill inserts come in diameters ranging from 11 to 35 mm and are available in 0.1-mm increments. The inserts designed specifically for steel and cast iron have new AM400 series coatings, which provide increased wear resistance and tool life. Inserts for nonferrous materials are coated with titanium nitride (TiN). Holders for the GEN3SYS XT Pro line are offered in depth-to-diameter ratios of 3×D, 5×D, 7×D, and a new 10xD. Holders are available in both imperial and metric shank diameters.

Stainless Steel Turning Optimized
GC2220 turning inserts are designed to offer higher resistance to plastic deformation and provide greater edge-line security when machining at elevated temperatures. GC2220 is a CVD-coated, gradient-sintered carbide that is designed specifically for semifinishing to rough turning under stable conditions where higher wear resistance is required. Sandvik Coromant’s proprietary Inveio coating provides unidirectional crystal orientation in the alumina coating layer, delivering high levels of wear resistance and tool life. Operations including external and/or internal turning operations in austenitic and duplex stainless steel components, such as pump housings, axles, shafts, seals, valves, and flanges will benefit. GC2220 is available for CoroTurn 107 inserts, which are designed for the internal and external turning of small or slender components, CoroTurn TR for external profiling, and T-Max P for general turning applications.

Deep Hole Drills
Mapal has extended its portfolio of deep hole drills with internal cooling for machining centers to include models above 1-mm diameter. The geometry of the new drills has been specially adapted to the small diameter range. Newly designed chip flutes and special face geometries are designed to make very high feeds and cutting speeds possible. Also due to the innovative cooling channels, the drills are also suitable for use with minimum quantity lubrication (MQL). In lengths up to 30×D, the gas/oil mixture is reliably transported to the cutting edges. Instead of a full coating, the new tools are coated only at the head for cost-effectiveness. The new miniature deep hole drills are available in the diameter range from 1.0 to 2.9 mm (shank diameter 3 mm) for universal drilling in steel and cast iron machining and drilling depths between 20×D and 30×D.

Durable Protection for Iron and Steel Parts
Microlok MZN finish is a fine-grained zinc phosphate coating for iron and steel components that provides protection up to 1400° F (760° C) for high heat applications such as pistons, rotor and calipers, and machined components where break-in lubricity is critical. The Microlok MZN coating is a 20-minute process that requires just five easy steps for processing, making it ideal for in-house finishing needs for many machine shops and OEM manufacturers. It is safe to apply at temperatures of 140–160° F (60–71° C) with no boiling or splattering. Bath maintenance requires only a simple procedure to monitor the concentration level. Microlok MZN is an ideal finish for parts that don’t require a dark black finish, but need robust corrosion protection. The Microlok MZN zinc phosphate finish complies with MIL-DTL-16232G, Type Z, Classes 1, 2 and 3. Finishers with existing lines can easily convert to the process.

Robotic Calibration, ISO-Based Performance Test
Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence’s RoboDyn software package, created in collaboration with the developers of SpatialAnalyzer, works in conjunction with a Leica Absolute Tracker for the calibration and performance testing of industrial robot systems. It allows for the direct calculation of robot characteristics such as base and tool alignments and full DH (Denavit-Hartenberg) parameters for robot manipulators. Positioning accuracies are stated to the rigorous ISO 9283 certification standard. The software’s calibration module provides a fast and intuitive process for aligning the robot with the laser tracker and then calibrating the robot’s kinematic configuration to improve absolute positioning accuracy. An ISO test module allows for performance testing according to the ISO 9283 standard, while a simulation module can be used to model and analyze line-of-sight issues and perform offline path creation prior to connection to the physical system.

Wiper Inserts Add Finishing
New wiper inserts have added finishing capabilities to Walter Blaxx M3024 heptagon milling cutter. The inserts, which have two right-hand and two left-hand cutting edges, were specifically developed for the M3024, and allow it to be used for finishing operations. Semi-finishing and finishing operations can now be combined into a single operation using a single tool. This reduces the number of tools required and reduces machining time by minimizing time spent changing and adjusting tools. The combination is well-suited to multi-step production of components such as exhaust turbochargers or turbine blades.
